Norman Greenbaum admits the Spirit in the Sky was a failed advertising jingle for the heaven tourism bureau that he thinks might exist.

Norman Greenbaum, singer of the song Spirit in the Sky admitted today that ... He wrote the song which had been famously featured in the film Guardians of the Galaxy Volume One; that it was originally intended for what he hoped was a real, what he thinks might be a real thing, which is the heaven tourism bureau. Describing a particularly intense dream where his agent pitched him the offer he received, and saying he happily would accept it, Norman Greenbaum was uncertain if it was real or not, but figured he'd tried his best to really sell heaven as best he could.
