final space chapter 5

Man, these things are hard to write. Back in the day I used to pretty obsessively read the AV club ... and I mean I still do, but not as obsessively anymore, you know, whenever the TV recap people would talk about writing reviews episode by episode for each show. I want to say how hard it is to continually write and talk about a TV show, and well, you know. It's starting to get a little hard, not that I thought the episode was bad or anything. Far from it. So Final Space - chapter five, aka the chapter where the show kind of starts.

Well, we've still not totally connected everybody from the opening credits yet. Little Cato is still lost and is still in prison, but it's starting to come together pretty much, and now we kind of get a sense of how the show works. This is the second episode with Quinn in the cast fully, and now they're ... I thought ... ah damn. I have been so nervous about this whole, like plot point, from day one, and I'm glad Gary handled ... so Quinn essentially tells Gary like what is obvious from the beginning, is like man, there's no way that this can happen at this point in the series. You come back later in the series when they've gotten to know each other and have a much better relationship and then boom. But at this point in the series there's no romantic possibility and I love that Gary agrees with it. But he has to be a little bit of a jerk about it, and decides yeah, you're right, and so he breaks up with her.

Which is both mature, and immature in the same way. So you know, it's Schrodinger's Cat maturity. So, that was funny. Anyways, so. The series doesn't do subtitles of names of episodes, which is good, I guess. Makes it a little bit hard to organize here. A little bit harder to organize at times, but whatever. I would call this episode Quinn's Discovery, because mostly this is a Quinn episode. Bad ass astute Quinn has ... and I love that we've revealed that Quinn is maybe the main comedic joke with Quinn which is pretty ... Quinn seems to be a slight parody of these astute bad asses who doesn't ... I can't be ... I can't trust anybody sort of things.

Because her ... anyway, so they started investigating what is final space, and they're looking into it, and ... well you know the entirety of the guard that she dedicated her entire life to and it turned out to be corrupt. Shocker, right? Anyways, so. So at the beginning as they start planning to go look for it, she is quoted as saying, "I trust only three things, quantum guard, my dog, and myself." All three of those things in the end she won't trust, because spoiler alert, spoiler alert, spoiler alert, the guard is corrupt.

And then in a pretty great call back to the final, I mean to the pilot, little details like this. I mean, first thing we introduced Quinn fixing a problem with Newton's theories and oh boy, turns out the little thing that she did, well that turned out to be like a huge freaking mistake, oh jeez. That's not good. That's not good at all because now they're going to destroy the universe with her ideas. So in the end she can't even trust herself.

I'm totally all over the place with describing this episode. Okay, so they land in a planet; they fight a bunch of like monster things; they find the giant laser; turns out the laser is being run by the guard which is in turn being run by Lord Commander David Tennant; so it's gonna be a great really creepy performance. They get electrocuted a bunch; they kill a bunch of guards trying to kill them; and in the end Moon Cake destroys the laser that they were using to break through space, with his moon cake powers of super awesome sweet laser that I love every time looking at, because it's freaking sweet to look at.

Then that is ... yeah, so as I said last episode, I was pretty sure the last episode was to the point where the series was getting better and oh boy, what do you know, this episode's going to continue to prove that the group dynamics are clearly jelling; the jokes are getting funnier, less reliant on catch phrases and the inherently funny word of Cookie, and more on character beats and moments.

It's like it's a good show.
